In Kenya and Africa, drought, food insecurity, and deforestation tend to dominate conversations on climate change. While these challenges are real and pressing, I believe that the solution lies not just in global treaties and large-scale interventions—but in the soil beneath our feet, in the hands of our farmers, and in the seeds we choose to plant.
At Furaha and Baraka Farms, our mission is deeply rooted in the belief that agriculture can be a powerful tool for climate action. Since 2015, we’ve worked with communities across Kenya to champion sustainable farming practices that not only protect our environment but also uplift livelihoods.
Sustainable Agriculture: More Than Just a Buzzword
Sustainable agriculture is about working with nature, not against it. It means using farming methods that regenerate the soil, preserve biodiversity, reduce harmful emissions, and protect water sources. It also means planting trees—and lots of them.
Through our certified nurseries in Embu, Kilifi, Ndhiwa, Nairobi, and several other counties, we’ve distributed over 20 million seedlings—including indigenous and fruit trees—to schools, smallholder farmers, and community groups. These seedlings are not only restoring degraded landscapes but also helping to capture carbon from the atmosphere, one tree at a time.

Local Stories, Real Impact
In Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County, we partnered with women-led farmer groups to integrate fruit trees into their homesteads and farms. What started as a tree planting initiative has evolved into a sustainable agroforestry model—where trees not only sequester carbon but also provide food, income, and shade. One of the women told us, “These trees are my pension.” That, to me, is climate action in its truest form—action that transforms lives.
In Nyeri, we worked with a public school to establish a green belt around their compound. The project taught students how to care for trees and helped improve the microclimate in the school area. Today, that school is not just greener—it’s cooler, literally.
Beyond Planting: Monitoring and Carbon Markets
Planting trees is just the beginning. We invest heavily in tree monitoring, using tools like satellite imagery and on-ground verification to ensure our seedlings thrive. We’re also helping clients tap into the carbon credit market, offering carbon offset project development services that meet international standards.
Africa has the land and labor to lead the world in nature-based climate solutions. What we need is structure, support, and a mindset shift—where farming isn’t just about food, but about the future of the planet.
Looking Ahead
At Furaha and Baraka Farms, we’re scaling up our efforts in carbon farming, community-led reforestation, and farmer training. We believe in an Africa where climate resilience is homegrown and farmer-led.
Because at the end of the day, the fight against climate change starts in the soil—and we’re proud to be digging in.
